Worker Poster - Free Russian Communist Propaganda Font for Download

OK - this is not a regular blog entry; more an act of bookkeeping. Since Igor seems to have re-invaded the main page of this blog in a fit of pique, it's probably time to take care of something I should have attended to a while ago. As some of you may remember, about a year ago I decided that the glorious monstrosity of a website I had constructed as a monument to myelf was too hubristic and self-obsessed for words. So I deleted most of it and just kept the blog, which had become the swollen appendix of the site. I felt better, and thought nobody noticed.

This was, in fact, mostly true. But it turned out there was one part of the site that people actually did appreciate, which was my pseudo-communist font Worker Poster. I wouldn't say I've been deluged with requests to put it back up, but there have been a suprising number of people who have written to say that they liked the font, had used it for a variety of projects, and had now lost the fucking thing - and could I please make it available again?

As a result I have come across a number of interesting uses of my font - for instance this band site, which uses it extensively. Somebody even put it on a T Shirt. I do get a real feeling of excitement when people take something I created and do something interesting with it. So by writing a blog entry I am again creating a permanent home for the font.

Anyway, here it is, in PC TrueType format - Worker Poster. If anybody desperately needs it in Mac format, ask me nicely and I might do that.

Two important notes: Firstly, the font does not have an upper and lower case - the upper case is an alphabet of reasonably regular letters, the lowercase consists of a variety of alternate letter-forms based on Cyrillic shapes, which you can mix and match into the uppercase for a nice Soviet-era effect. Use character map. Secondly, while you are free to use the font in any way you like, please do not redistribute or modify it without my permission. I do not want this font included on those crappy "A Million and One Free Fonts!" rip-off CD-roms.

As always, if you do anything interesting with this font, please send me the results, I always find that interesting and rewarding.

Thank you to all the people who wrote and said nice things about the font and sent me examples of birthday posters, stickball championships, business conferences, and the like, using the font - you motivated me to finally put it back up.

Nicholas, what in the name of fuck are you doing to Igor?

:)

I'd let it slide if it didn't remind me so much of a recurring nightmare I have. POSSESSED DOGS NOT GOOD.

It's a sexy font but you know that already. If you make it Mactastic it would be even better... and I could use it. Which would be superb, but hey, it's up to you.

:) The dog isn't posessed, just defending bicycle lady. Igor, being a resentful communist foot-soldier still fighting old battles, has tried an insurrection, and turns out the borzoi is having none of it. Nothing to do with me.

Yeah, a bit lazy on the mac conversion, I'll try to get to it next time I have a day off.

I think you're wrong. I think the dog wants to ride the bicycle. The lady was able to control him, however Igor, for all his tough looks, was not able to stop him rising up and setting about his dream in the only way he knew how: blood.

Not to be too geeky, you could always make it into an OpenType font, which could be opened on both PC and Mac.

I am a history teacher, not a computer wiz. I would love to use this font on my powerpoints. What can I do to make it work on a powerpoint?

This is a dreadfully delayed response, I'm sure, since you posted this last year..but I had to say something. I'm your typical art college student and i wanted to let you know this font would be just perfect for my midterm project in Digital Color..... granted, I'm using a Mac right now so I'll have to wait till I get to the parallels back home to use it..but I just wanted to say wonderful job! I hope it really adds some flare to my Propaganda-inspired poster design! :D

I'm sorry, I'm not too bright with computers, I need this font terribly for my weddingcard, could you please explain to me how I can get this font in my fontlist?

Kind regards,
