Google Twins

How is everybody's new year going? My New Year's Eve amd New Year's Day were demented fun, but since then the new year has been just like the old one, which isn't what I want.

The subject for today is Google Twins, or perhaps it's Googlegangers. The mysterious stranger on the other side of the world who shares your name, and who's ephemeric internet detritus can be observed and followed. One needs a reasonably unique name for this, but I know a few people who have Google twins - Tahlia's is a model in Victoria, while Vanessa's, somewhat mortifyingly, writes really terrible poetry. Here's mine - and I hope he won't mind me writing about him; I think he's aware of my existence, as I am of his. Presenting, 2nd Lieutenant Colonel Nick Carvan, of the United States Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol.

Over the last few years, I have watched with something akin to pride as my Google twin's references have continued to increase, usually in joky Civilian Air Patrol newsletters. He seems to be doing well for himself in his chosen field:

"Cadet Carvan joined CAP in June 2000 and since then has received a Commander’s Commendation and SAR/Find Ribbon among other awards. He has attended PJOC, APJOC and COS. He runs squadron ES training exercises and is qualified in high angle rescue. Cadet Carvan plans to pursue a degree in Emergency Medical Science, becoming a Paramedic. Following that he plans to enlist in the U.S. Army and serve in the Special Forces."

Admittedly, I think if we met each other we would probably not get on that well - he seems to be a godfearing but solid US military boy, keen to defend his country. At a meeting early last year (at which my Google twin received the North Central Region Commander Commendation), the meeting closed with a prayer, before Nick Carvan and a colleague "retired the colors", whatever that means. So I don't think we'd have much in common.

He probably couldn't run a second hand book business, but then, what do I know about high angle rescue? Nothing. If you're stuck, and need rescuing from a high angle, he's the Nick Carvan for you. I cannot think of any situation in which you would desperately need a bookseller.

Yes, he fascinates me, and though we have clearly chosen different paths for our shared name, I cannot help but feel some connection to him, some stake in his existence. I cheer him on from the sidelines, and wish him nothing but good health and safety.

Nick Carvan, if you should ever read this: my best wishes to you, and please continue to uphold our good name.

because Roberts is such acommon last name, i seem to have a few google twins. lucky my first name, Dane, is a little more random. one twin is a 17 year old student in the UK, who may or may not be the same student who won a "Grand Prize" from a Culture panel for his essay "Themes in Commedy: Russia and the West".

Another twin (triplet?), who seems to have been a little more successful than me (so far... theres still time!). He is a seemingly famous concert violine player who plays for a number of impressive sounding orchestras including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

i'm guessing they are all different people to the Dane Roberts, of Minneapolis, MN, who commented on Mastercare Car Service's website that "i go to the Edina, MN store and have had prompt communicative service and the customer service has been fantastic."

you never know though, i suppose the famous concert violinist may have had car trouble when touring the usa sometime?

this is crap. Maybe I'm a poor searcher but all the hits for my name are either for me or dead ella's mentioned fleetingly on genealogy websites and some questionable personal journals that I don’t even think are written by people with the same name.

No pleasing cross-global symmetrical connections for me, just loneliness and jolting realisation of how clearly self obsessed I must be, to be the only me on the internet. Thanks Nicholas :P

Yeah would have thought your name would have been more common, Ella. There is a great poem, though, by somebody with your name who goes or went to Christchurch Primary, and is in 4b - hey, maybe it's you...?

"People all over the world are different
That’s why we are all so great.
Even though you are different
You can still be my mate.

Our languages are different
The way we sing and chatter.
Perhaps we would get on better
If looks didn’t matter.

Liking other people
Who are not the same as you
Eventually could mean
We could have a great world too."

I've got a few: three in Melbourne (one of whom I went to uni with and one of whom my ex-girlfriend grew up with), a bike courier in Canada, a graphic designer in the UK and a lawyer in New York. My favourite is the TOWN that shares my name - did a blog about it a while back here.

Happy New Year, Nicholas (not said in relation to the above, just intended as general goodwill).

hey that poem's pretty good for somebody in year 4.
didn't we decide that my google twin looks like a man though? i felt bad posting that, but then realised she'd never read this as long as you never reveal my last name, so good, i'm free to bitch :)

Yeah, my poetry is little better. Nonetheless hurruh, may mini-ella (or illa as her New Zealand brethren would call her) grow and flourish, leaving trails of internet ephemera so that I may creepily keep tabs on her.

I bet your googleganger is burley Nicholas.

my (only living) googleganger is an argentinian folklore promoter. which is weird, as i lived in argentina for a year and used to go to folklore (argentinian and chilean folk music) concerts

don't sell booksellers short. just a few weeks ago, i decided that i wanted to read Lethem's Fortress of Solitude and i wanted to read it RIGHT THEN - luckily, the Brunswick Street Bookstore is open reasonably late and a potential crisis was averted
